Raw Diva Notes 6/8/09

Very few divas used on Raw tonight. Only Maryse, Kelly Kelly, Mickie James, and Vickie Guerrero saw time. Santino was on, but not in his drag outfit.
Starting with the big news first, Vickie Guerrero has quit as Raw GM. Last night was the last straw. The fans loved it. It should also be nice in shaking things up again. Edge came out right after that announcement to drop another bombshell. He said that he was going to apologize. That is, until Vickie quit. He finally admitted to just using Vickie for her power. That should have been no surprise. It was obvious from the start. Then he reaffirmed that he wanted a divorce, crushing Vickie further. She went a little overboard with the reaction. Overall, she played a great heel role in the segment. Rumors are saying that she is gone for good. In the end, although she was a great heel, I am glad to see Vickie lose the GM spot.
Maryse once again defended her title against Kelly Kelly. Kelly Kelly won by DQ two weeks ago. Last week, Maryse pinned her in a tag match. That could have been enough to blow off Kelly Kelly as a challenger, but they still gave Kelly another shot. A good decision, since the ending of the first title match did call for a rematch. This match was slightly better than there first. Nevertheless, still could have done more with the time. A few spots to make both look good. Maryse wins in the end with her DDT. Maryse defeats Kelly Kelly to retain the Diva’s Championship.
Mickie James came out for commentary. I believe I mentioned this before, definitely for when McCool was feuding with Maryse/Maria, but having the officially-undeclared next opponent for another wrestler do commentary is always a smart, easy move to keep that person in the picture. At least they did not declare that the winner of the match would face Mickie beforehand. They did that with Candice Michelle during Beth Phoenix’s title defense against Mickie last year. It took a bit from the match. And unlike Beth Phoenix, who paid Mickie virtually no attention during the brief period before the bell rang, Maryse at least managed to show Mickie James and Kelly Kelly both some attention during this period. It is not easy to have matches like this with someone you have to work with sitting out there. You have to taunt with them, but you cannot ignore your opponent until the bell rings. That would be disrespectful and treating your opponent as not a threatening target. Mickie did a good job of targeting Maryse with her entrance. Maryse, as I said, did well in reciprocating while still not forgetting Kelly Kelly and trying to play the crowd. Mickie was, of course, out there to hype her feud with Maryse. She could have done better out there on commentary. She got cut off too often before she could get her thought out. She said pretty much everything the fans could have assumed. She thinks Maryse fears her because of the hairspray incident. She wants the title. A bit more emotion would have been nice. It is not always easy to get that emotion out without going overboard (Vickie’s segment tonight). It would help if the WWE stopped pushing “Smart, Sexy, and Powerful” and had some of these women show their own charisma with actual gimmicks. After the match, Mickie got in the ring to back Maryse away from attacking Kelly Kelly. That pushed the angle of Maryse fearing her well.
Maryse had another backstage segment with The Miz. More French was spoken, I am sure that will be translated on the news sites soon. This segment further helped Maryse play with her feud with Mickie and push that she is sexy. How likely is a Miz/Maryse vs. Cena/Mickie match?

I pretty much predicted Mickie would be on commentary, Kelly was a filler, nothing more, nothing less. I think we’ll see two title matches between Maryse/Mickie (maybe three if you want the rematch). The first match i think Maryse will go over ‘Third time’s a charm’. Second, Mickie finally getting the title, and then the rematch. I’m enjoying the feud, WWE are finally putting some effort in, some what, and giving the feud time to build up. My only beef is that it needs more backstage segments, it isn’t hard to put a little exchanging of words between the two in the lockeroom, is it? Either way, i’m happy Kelly isn’t champion, and happy Mickie might well be getting the Divas title.
I also recently made a top 30 moves of Mickie James, as a Mickie fan yourself, i figured you might be interested; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvdHjpoG77s
Great blog as always, and i look forward to your thoughts on Mondays up coming Raw.
Pretty much the path I think it will go too. Maryse wins the first televised title match between the two, but Mickie wins the title in the second down the road. Problem is, will that be before or after McCool wins it? Maybe some fans have already moved beyond that hope.
And very nice tribute to Mickie. Those moves showcase Mickie’s ability in technical wrestling, risk taking, agility, and a lot of other skills. It must have taken a lot of time and thought to put it together.
