Depush Gail To Push Gail?

Gail Kim

After I recently brought up the rumors going around for Gail Kim’s depush, I thought ahead a bit. Michelle McCool is being built up as the top heel to take on the Women’s Champion, the missing Melina. I do not want to entertain all possibilities of what can happen when they finally fight for the title, and various feuds after right now. I just want to focus on how this “depush” for Gail Kim may lead to a big push in the future.

Gail Kim is obviously being destroyed as the top contender she had been built up to be since her return. Someone credible has to build McCool up. Assume McCool does defeat Melina. Melina gets her rematch, probably loses, and then what? The only other credible, healthy Smackdown face is Gail Kim. She gets her title feud right back. After a good amount of time to feud, which would have certainly gotten some build already from Gail Kim’s return, which featured her attacking both Maryse and Michelle McCool, and then both women trading victories over each other, the face can triumph over the heel. Out of the question? What was that thing that happened to Christian again? Surprise return on ECW to get in ECW Champion Jack Swagger’s face, built up huge as a challenger, pinning Swagger himself before the title match, but then jobbing to Swagger again in the title match, losing a few more times after, and the dirt sheets start screaming that Vince McMahon is not impressed with Christian. Last time I checked, Christian did defeat Jack Swagger for that title belt. I can analyze why that may have been the case, but I do not want to stray too far away from the main topic. Point is, Gail Kim’s WWE return has mirrored that of Cristian’s return in some degree. Christian won gold in the end, so will that happen with Gail?

As I have mentioned before, at least the WWE is still giving Gail Kim time to work in the ring. That may change when the feud officially switches to Melina vs. McCool. I doubt we will see what happened to Mickie James happen to Gail Kim. Mickie James jobbed continuously to Beth Phoenix from 2007 to 2008. After Mickie finally gets some momentum by winning a tag match against Beth and Victoria, she vanishes the next week when Candice Michelle returns. Just when the feud was picking up, the WWE pulled Mickie out. I do not see that happening with Gail Kim. She has already proven she can beat McCool. And unlike the case of Mickie gaining momentum and then disappearing (awkward), the WWE is pushing Gail’s momentum down to bring Melina into the picture more easily against a clear foe, McCool. Is it really horrible to want your Women’s Champion back? Many people are waiting for Melina, and so am I. Also, Melina is not injured, so the WWE is not killing time for that. People can argue whether this is part of a punishment for the draft issue or not, but I do not see it as similar to a desperate WWE banking on an injured Candice Michelle to return from that injury to feud with the Women’s Champion. Melina is not a contender being pushed to replace another contender in the midst of a feud. Melina is the one who needs to be in the picture. And as long as she is face, the traditional response would be to send a heel after her. That is not Gail Kim right now. But once that title, the one seen as more credible than the one on Raw, does get on a heel, Gail Kim may very well be closer to being a two-time WWE Women’s Champion. And I doubt it will take Melina getting seriously injured to force the WWE to play that hand. Just an optimistic interpretation.
